Here are a few pictures from Anna’s first summer swim meet.

She was nervous the night before. Nervous enough that she dramatically declared, “I WON’T swim tomorrow” but quickly rescinded her statement when she remembered the ribbons….the awesome, super-cool ribbons. She was stoked to have a brand-new Speedo bathing suit in blue (her current favorite color), with new matching goggles and a matching blue towel. She loved seeing friends. She loved being in the water. She shyly smiled after each heat, warming with our high fives and congratulations as she rocked each and every heat she swam in. This girl is a fish and she loves it. We just love watching her enjoy what she does so very well.

HEO 2 followed from Vandenberg in 2008.Getting the first GEO off the ground from Cape Canaveral came in May 2011, bringing the modernized enhancements to the surveillance network.The second GEO awaits blastoff from the Cape on Tuesday at 5:21 p.m. EDT. This past week was spent installing ordnance, closing out the rocket’s payload shroud and buttoning up the vehicle’s other compartments.Mission managers conducted their launch readiness review at the Cape on Friday morning and granted approval for Monday’s 10 a.m. EDT rollout of the Atlas 5 rocket from its assembly building to the pad at Complex 41.Tuesday’s countdown will start ticking just after 10 a.m. EDT, followed by the loading of liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen into the rocket a little after 3 p.m. EDT.The day’s launch opportunity opens at 5:21 p.m. EDT (2121 GMT) and extends 40 minutes to 6:01 p.m. The window moves four minutes earlier if the liftoff is bumped back to Wednesday for some reason.Weather forecasters predict a 70 percent chance of acceptable conditions during Tuesday’s window.It will mark the 37th launch of an Atlas 5 booster in the past decade, the 17th in the 401 configuration with a four-meter nose cone and no strap-on solid motors and the fourth Atlas flight in four months. Separation of the spacecraft from the rocket occurs about 43 minutes after liftoff.From there, ground controllers will spend about 9 days performing 6 firings of the craft’s main engine to circularize the orbit before deploying the appendages and commencing the testing campaign.”We are obviously very excited for the launch, we’re also challenging our team and we’re confident we can do this, to achieve the (satellite’s) checkout and certification in a little over 6 months,” Planeaux said.Built around Lockheed Martin’s commercial A2100 satellite platform, with a 12-year design life, the craft is a clone of the GEO 1, having been built at the same time using the same parts. The birds are equipped with RH-32 radiation-hardened single board computers with reloadable flight software.After deploying its pair of power-producing solar arrays for 2,800 watts, GEO 2 will have a wing span of 49 feet. The craft also extends a light shade for the payload and unfolds gimbaled communications antennas for secure, spot beam transmissions.Its scanner and starer instruments, amounting to 1,000 pounds of hardware, have highly agile pointing mirrors and dual infrared sensors that feature short wave, mid wave and see-to-ground spectral band assemblies.”At a time when this capability is more vital than ever, the addition of GEO 2 will further enhance our nation’s capabilities for early warning detection of ballistic missile launches around the globe, support our nation’s ballistic missile defense system, greatly expand our technical intelligence-gathering capability and provide enhanced situational awareness for warfighters on the battlefield,” said Dave Sheridan, Lockheed Martin’s SBIRS program director in Sunnyvale, Calif.Integration of the sensors and satellite for GEO 3 will be finished next year for launch in 2015, with GEO 4 following along about a year later in the sequence. The two halves of the rocket’s nose cone will be brought together to encapsulate the spacecraft on Jan. 23 in preparation for delivery of the payload to the Space Launch Complex 3-East pad on Jan. 25. The United Launch Alliance Atlas 5 rocket has been on the pad since October, undergoing its own set of pre-flight checkouts. Credit: Christopher Bentley/BioneticsLiftoff of the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program Flight 19 spacecraft is planned for 7:46 a.m. local time (10:46 a.m. EDT; 1446 GMT) at the opening of a 10-minute launch window at Vandenberg Air Force Base.Outfitted with a suite of seven sensors, DMSP provides the military with visible and infrared cloud pictures, measures precipitation, surface temperatures and soil moisture, and collects space weather data.But as past satellites were flown and ended up exceeding their design lives in orbit, the launch date for Flight 19 slipped — and slipped.Until now, when the Lockheed Martin-built satellite is finally needed in space.”The program was supposed to have flown out years ago. Success, though, believe it or not, was the cause of the delay. This last block of satellites have lasted significantly longer than anyone projected. So when this satellite was originally built the plan was for it to be launched shortly after it was finished,” said Lt. Col. James Bodnar, 4th Space Launch Squadron commander at Vandenberg.Bodnar tells the story:”This satellite was built in the mid 90s. There’s components that were made as early as 1993. It was turned over to the Air Force as finished in 1998 and put into long-term storage for 10 years.”The satellite itself was originally built in (East Windsor,) New Jersey. When it was finished it was shipped to California and put into storage in Sunnyvale. In 2008, it was brought out of storage.”Along the way it underwent two lifetime extension efforts to boost the in-space life expectancy, upgraded with star trackers and a digital gyroscope for navigation and replacement of materials and lubricants that had degraded over time. And there has been testing — lots of testing — on Flight 19.”We have had to go through and make sure the satellite and sensors all work as they were intended. We did go through a testing regime to make sure the results that we got several years ago when the satellite was delivered to the Air Force still worked,” said Col. There, it was hoisted into the gantry and mated to its booster rocket at long last.”I’ve been in this business a while and this is a rare and blessed problem to have in that the satellites (in space) have continued capabilities significantly longer than originally designed, saving the government large amounts of money and time in the form of development follow-on blocks of satellites,” Bodnar said.”I think we need to highlight the reason behind that and that’s been the fantastic longevity of each of the satellites that have been launched over the precious years.”One satellite, for instance, was launched in 1995 and remains alive today. Flight 19 will be 7th satellite in the operating DMSP constellation.”The satellite we are launching could provide weather data as late as 2020,” Bodnar said.DMSP 19 is the fifth satellite of its particular breed to launch and is part of Lockheed Martin’s legacy that has produced nearly 50 satellites throughout the program’s 52-year history.”The DMSP program is the longest running satellite production program in the world. Credit: Pat Corkery/United Launch AllianceThe United Launch Alliance booster is set for liftoff at 11:13 p.m. PST (0713 GMT; 2:13 a.m. EST Friday) from Space Launch Complex 3-East at Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif.The Atlas 5 rocket’s primary payload is classified. Its owner, the U.S. government’s National Reconnaissance Office, has not divulged its identity or purpose.But a warning released to keep pilots out of the rocket’s flight path shows the Atlas 5 will fly southwest from California, heading for a unique retrograde orbit traveling the opposite direction of Earth’s rotation.Only a handful of launches have gone in that direction from Vandenberg, and experts believe they carried new-generation satellites equipped with radar imaging payloads to track the movements and activities of intelligence targets without hindrance from clouds or darkness, which prevent optical cameras from getting pictures.The Atlas 5 launching Thursday night is configured with a five-meter diameter payload shroud built by RUAG Space in Switzerland, no solid rocket boosters and a Centaur upper stage with a single hydrogen-fueled RL10 engine supplied by Aerojet Rocketdyne.That version of the workhorse rocket is known as the “501” variant. ULA can put a four-meter or five-meter fairing on the Atlas 5, install a second upper stage engine, and add up to five strap-on boosters depending on the needs of its payload.The Atlas 5’s bronze first stage, powered by a an RD-180 engine built in Russia, will fire for more than four minutes. During the first stage burn, the rocket will jettison its nose fairing in two halves, followed five seconds later by the release of a component called the forward load reactor, which affixed the fairing to the Centaur upper stage.With that milestone, the launch will go into a news blackout at the request of the NRO, which is banning the release of information on the progress of the Centaur second stage’s engine firings.ULA and the National Reconnaissance Office plan to issue press releases once the mission is complete.After deployment of the primary satellite, the Centaur will release 12 small CubeSat secondary payloads sponsored by the NRO’s Mission Integration Directorate and NASA’s Educational Launch of Nanosatellites, or ELaNa, program. They include:AeroCube 5, a mission for the Aerospace Corp. to demonstrate new technologies for pointing and tracking between two CubeSats. AeroCube 5 will also record launch environment data such as pressure, temperature and vibration, as well as demonstrate a de-orbit device.ALICE, developed by the Air Force Institute of Technology, will test the performance of an advanced carbon nanotube array, which has great potential for smaller, lighter, and more energy-efficient satellite propulsion.Four satellites for the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command — SNaP, TacSat 6 and two SMDC-ONE — will test advanced nanosatellite communications technologies.CUNYSAT 1, developed by Medgar Evans College at the City University of New York, serves as an educational tool for students and will observe Earth’s ionosphere.IPEX, or the Intelligent Payload Experiment, was provided by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Cal Poly. Credit: United Launch AllianceThe TDRS system was born in 1973 to keep astronauts and satellites in constant contact with mission controllers, closing the substantial gaps every orbit as spacecraft passed into and out of range of ground stations scattered around the globe.When TDRS first became operational in late 1983, the initial space shuttle mission to use the system relayed more information to the ground during its 10 days in orbit than in all 39 previous American manned spaceflights.Relying on dispersed ground stations was a costly requirement and subjected the sites’ operators to dangerous conditions in far-off countries, yet the system provided only 15 percent communications capability per orbit.”What would it take to have continuous 24/7 communications services for NASA missions? That is what prompted the TDRS constellation,” said Paul Buchanan, TDRS deputy project manager and contracting officer.”We didn’t want to the outages of voice or data, that prompted to the TDRS system to be designed and built.”Prolonged disconnections were eliminated with the debut of TDRS, effectively moving those tracking stations 22,300 miles into the sky to gaze down at the user spacecraft, upping the blanket coverage to 85 percent per orbit with two operational TDRS satellites.But looking to close that remaining gap, or zone of exclusion, more spacecraft were put into operation to create full 100 percent orbital coverage.Six of the seven first-generation satellites went into orbit, with one lost in the Challenger accident. The space shuttles deployed those TRW-built craft between 1983 and 1995, with four of the long-lived birds still doing the job today 22,300 miles above Earth.”As spacecraft age, they all kind of develop their own unique set of problems, especially for spacecraft beyond their design life. So each one has to be cared for in different ways,” said Jeff Gramling, NASA’s TDRS project manager from the Goddard Space Flight Center.But despite their advanced ages, they remain useful, and the demands of communications services continue to grow.”We’ve been fortunate in that our first-generation spacecraft, the one of those we launched through 1995 with a 10-year design life, have lived well beyond the design life. Credit: Pat Corkery/United Launch AllianceA second-generation came along between 2000 and 2002, as the TDRS H, I and J satellites were deployed by unmanned Atlas 2A rockets from Cape Canaveral to improve the capabilities of the network.Now, Boeing is building the K, L and M spacecraft for launches over the next three years to keep the system replenished and operating well into the 2020s.”What we are doing is ensuring that we can continue provide services that they’ve come to rely on — persistant, continuous coverage with no latiency to facilitate their missions,” Gramling said.”Lots of people out there are relying on the system and we need to make sure we keep it healthy to satisfy their needs.”TDRS L should be ready to fly next January and M will follow in December 2015.”Architecturally they are the same as HIJ with a little better performance,” Gramling said. “From a users’ perspective, its generally continuing to provide the same services we provided in the past.”This first of the third-generation, known as the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite K, or TDRS K, is headed for service 22,300 miles over the Pacific Ocean.”TDRS K bolsters our network of satellites that provides essential communications to support space exploration,” said Badri Younes, deputy associate administrator for Space Communications and Navigation at NASA Headquarters. “It will improve the overall health and longevity of our system.”The satellite stood 26 feet tall and weighed over 7,600 pounds at launch, including 3,700 pounds of maneuvering fuel loaded inside the craft. Once fully deployed in space, TDRS K’s solar wings will stretch 69 feet tip-to-tip to generate 3,220 watts of power and charge internal nickel-hydrogen batteries.The primary physical feature of the satellite is two 15-foot-diameter flexible graphite mesh antenna dishes that are folded like taco shells for launch, then spring into shape once released in orbit. Boeing designed, developed and tested the spacecraft in El Segundo, Calif., and NASA provided the launch. Once the aerospace company gets the satellite into the proper orbit, deploys the appendages and demonstrates that the craft works, the space agency then takes ownership for a lifespan of 15 years or more.”We are launching now for an immediate need and replenishment schedule, we’re also expecting some of the other legacy spacecraft from the TRW days to decommissioned in the next years. That’s reason for not just K but L and M. It’s a fine balance between the existing system, and when they fail, versus the replenishment,” Buchanan said.The three satellites of the third-generation, the Atlas 5 rockets to launch them and some work performed on the ground systems amount to a $1.1 billion program.”All the Hubble pictures come through TDRS, all the video that we see from the space station and the astronauts and the video we saw from the shuttle, it all comes through TDRS, and then we have all the Earth-orbiting satellites, all that data comes through TDRS,” Buchanan said. “The government has designated TDRS as a critical national asset due to the fact that continuous communications around the world is critical to people’s security, weather-related events, that’s the important value NASA provides.”Wednesday’s launch was the 35th flight for the Atlas 5 since debuting in 2002 and the 30th to occur from the Florida spaceport.
